Mumbles Rangers U14s - Genoa,
Italy Tour 2007 In the early hours of the 5th September 2007, Mumbles Rangers U14s together with parents and club officials will leave Oystermouth Square for Stansted Airport where they will catch a flight to Genoa, Italy, to participate in the 15th James Spensley International Tournament (6th - 9th September 2007). Hopefully returning with the trophy! The Tournament, is organised by Genoa Cricket and Football Club (the senior team have just been promoted along with Juventus to the Italian Serie A League) www.genoacfc.it and is an invitation only tournament with teams competing from Italy and other European countries. Mumbles Rangers will be the only team from Wales. Our thanks to Alan Curtis and all the players of Swansea City All Stars and Mumbles Rangers Seniors for taking part in a fundraising football match on Sunday 26th August 2007 at Underhill Park (KO 11am) in order to raise funds towards the tour. Our thanks also go to Bergoni Sportswear for sponsoring Mumbles Rangers U14s with home and away football strips for the tournament. Also thanks to the local businesses that have advertised in the match day programme or given donations. See the players and managers who are taking part in the tournament here. to view the tournament diary. In the 1950's Carlo Prete, a young Italian from Genoa, was sent to Swansea by his coalimporter father to improve his English. Carlo settled in Mumbles and soon became a Mumbles Ranger. In 1960 he had to return to Italy to do his Military Service, but a year later a party of 36 Mumbles Rangers, lead by Billy Johns, undertook an arduous 28-hour ferry and train journey across Europe to Genoa. Billy and 'his' boys were determined to visit their great friend Carlo Prete in his home town. In 1975 Carlo returned to Swansea with an Italian football team as a tribute to his great friend, founder of Mumbles Rangers, Billy Johns. Today Mumbles Rangers is one of the largest and most respected football clubs in Wales and we are very proud and happy to be representing Wales in the 15th Torneo Spensley and reinforcing the long-standing links between Mumbles, Carlo Prete and Genoa. |
